Mums' Lil Westies  of the Ross Family Farm
"Every family needs a Westie and a Mums to let you have one."
Every girl in the South
knows "you mustn't wear
white after Labor Day."
BUT Mums' Lil Westies'
white coats, chic look
and all around classy
appearance belies this
fact.  Everyone takes
note of their alert
looking eyes, adorable
size and stylish walk as
we go around the
neighborhood, summer or
winter.

AKC   Breed Standard  FOR  THE WEST HIGHLAND WHITE TERRIER
(
underlined)    The AKC is a very reputable registery that guarantees pure bred dogs. You can be asssured that your Westie
is registered with AKC.  The AKC also offers lots of information about shows, care, health, diseases common to various
breeds, how to choose a breeder and I recommend you check out their website:
www.akc.com, another excellent site is the
WHTCA which offers an owner profile for the West Highland Terrier! www.whtca.com
GENERAL
APPEARANCE
Small, but potent!  They are all
terrier! Bred to be used to the rugged
Scottish terrain, they move with
strength and tenacity wherever they
go.  They have strong front legs, thick
nails and pads and turned out front
feet which are slightly larger than their
back feet. I noticed Katy, 3mos walking
sideways the other day. This trait is
necessary to move earth and not dig
herself into the hole!
BODY
BALANCE
Small, but sound.Only 11' high at the
withers for males and 10" high at the
withers for females.,says the breed
standard.    Mums' Lil Westies are bred
to be healthy and strong, give the
impression of a compact dog with good
balance and structure.
HEAD
NECK AND TOP LINE
Small, but well muscled!  I tease my scottish
heritage husband that he is build like Willlie!
He is short, but very well muscled.  He is well
set on sloping shoulders and his length is
well proportioned.  His neck is medium, not
too long and not too short.  His ribs are set
deep and heart shaped.  His chest is deep
and extends to his elbows.  Willie also has a
carrot shaped tail that is carried very high,
not curled over his back, set very straight on
his back.  I love them both!
LEGS, FEET AND
HINDQUARTERS
COAT AND COLOR
Must be double coated!  His outer coat should be hard, straight,
white hair approximately 2" long.  Mums' Lil Westies have not
reached that length yet, partly do to Mums learning to groom and
their ages.  They have been clipped!  Right now they have very
little furnishings (hair underneath their bodies)!  They have a little
bit of wave, which is due to the clipping rather than stripping.
Stripping uses the hand and pulls out dead hairs.  Their is a real art
to stripping!  They are white, but there are many shades of white!
They have wheaten dorsal stipes down their backs.  This was a
concern at first, but is quite common in West HIghland Terriers.
The whiter dogs are preferred in the show ring, but wheaten is
recognized as a common trait.   Baby powder, chalk  and whitener
shampoos bring out a very white coat and do not affect the
sensitive skin of the Westie, if used moderately. The skin has a
gray tinge, black eyes and lip rims, although many Westies have
pink skin.
TEMPERAMENT
Small but fiesty!  These lil creatures are
ready and will take on anything. They are
so bold.  When purchasing a Westie, you
should be aware of their independence.
Children should be at least 6 years old
before handling a Westie and even then
with adult supervision until it is seen that the
child can be directive with the westie.
Westies are highly intelligent and bargains
must be reached between them and their
handlers. They are not susposed to be
"timid" (AKC).  They are upbeat, inquisitive
and highly personable.  They love people
and some children find them a little bit too
friendly.  Take the profile on the
www.westieclubofamerica.com to see if the
westie is right for you..
Small, but confident! A real showman.
"Possessing no small measure of
self-esteem" (AKC) is not an
exaggeration. His back is straight and
level and his hindquarters very strong.
He is as agile as a deer and moves like
a gazelle. He has a double coat, that
protects his body as he moves against
the rugged Scottish terrain in chase of
fox.  He brings this to the show ring as
well, when he is all groomed and
glossy. Ideally, his top coat should be
about 2" long with a downy protective
undercoat.
Strong powerful jaws. The lips look like a licorice stick
encasing a scissor bite.No undershot mouth, misaligned
or missing incisors.  The ears are small and stand up
straight. Jessie's were slow coming up, but did before
she was 3 months old.  They are trimmed very short
about 1" from the tip. Katie is the only Westie with a lot
of dark pigmentation on the skin at the ear tips. The
others are pink.tips. The others are pink.
