Grooming Your West Highland White Terrier

Learn to groom your Westie early on.  Keeping your West Highland Terrier neat and
trim reduces health problems and keeps your young
Westie disciplined as well. Your
friends will also enjoy being around your nice clean healthy dog. Lil Lady Jecca, one
of my first
Westies, was 9 wks old when she came to the Ross Family Farm.  At  age
3 months, she is already used to being groomed. Here she lies patiently for me to
finish brushing her. There are several tools you might want to purchase to groom
your West Highland White Terrier puppy.
  • A Pin Brush
  • A Comb
  • Straight Edge Scissors, if you plan to groom her yourself.
  • Blunt Edge Scissors, for trimming the eyes and ears.
  • Nail clippers, I use baby ones for the Westie puppies.
These suggestions are suggestions only if you want to play with your West Highland
White Terrier
.  A professional groomer will do a more complete job.
First, I use a
brush like the one you see in the picture.  It  can be purchased where
they sell pet supplies. The
pin brush on the other side comes next. I use it very
gently, making sure she is enjoying the grooming process.  I
trim her 1" from the
tip of each ear on both sides, with straight edge scissors
. At this age her ears are
large for her body!  But I don't laugh! As any Lil Lady, she is very sensitive about her
looks. I also
clip her nails.  This is not very much fun for either of us, but it must be
done.  I use
guillotine type clippers. If her nails are wet and soft, it is much easier.
Have your vet show you how to do it without cutting the quick. Sometimes I
dust
baby powder
on her back, making sure that I don't get it in her eyes.  I brush it in,
then
give her a big hug and tell her what a good girl she was while being groomed

I have recently purchased a Quik Change Deshedder from Revival Animal Health.
It is perfect for double coated breeds like the West Highland White Terriers
(Westies) for their special grooming needs.   Check out their website:

Wellness - A Key To Good Care Of Your West
Highland White Terrier!

"AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A
POUND OF CURE!"

Preventing illness is just as important as treating it.
You take vitamins, have regular checkups, and  get
your vaccinations on time. Have a calendar or
reminders around so you won't forget these important
issues for you pet.
1.The first thing you should do when getting your puppy
is to find a vet who cares for small animals. Set up an
appointment for a physical checkup, then follow through
with your vet's recommendations on keeping your pet
healthy. Your vet is a wonderful source and you should
make him or her your friend as well as your puppy's
friend.
2.  Keep a supply of good dog food in a clean plastic
bucket with a sealing lid. Wash your puppies bowl after
each feeding and don't leave food in the bowl more than
15 minutes.  Your puppy may not be hungry at the first
feeding, but he will be ready for the next.  Use clean
food.
3.  Keep your puppy's crate clean and the area around
his crate clean.  When I mop the  floor  of their kennel
with a mixture of Simple Green, purex and water every
morning, they seem to sleep better.  My puppies get
lots of love and attention and they are very happy and
quiet.
4.  Keep your puppy clean, too.  Brush your puppy with
a regular brush before putting him in his crate. See
Good Grooming Benefits for more ideas.
5.  I also use a high quality dog food - Solid Gold is my
favorite, no bi products, organic and lots of vitamins. (
Solid Gold is sold at Petco and has a beautiful picture
of a West Highland White Terrier on its pink package.

GOOD GROOMING BENEFITS for WESTIES!

1. HEALTH
Just as brushing makes your hair shine, it is
great for your Westie, too.  Ask you vet what
to look for when grooming: parasites, etc.
Using a slicker brush removes all dead hair.
It also cleans up dirt that goes along with
white and Westies' digging.  Good grooming
is a health issue.
2.  RELATIONSHIPS
Having a friend spend time with you is as
important to your Westie as you.  Grooming
is a soothing experience.  Notice how they
go right to sleep afterward.  It is like a good
bed time foot rub. It really helps you bond
with your puppy.  Good grooming increases
the time you spend with your pet.
3. BODY ODOR AND GOOD LOOKS!
You brush your hair everyday ( at least your
should) so that you will look clean and neat.
Do the same for your best friend. A lil dash
of baby powder never hurts either.  Don't
forget to brush the teeth.  No one likes bad
breath.  Rubbing soda on the gums
decreases gum odor, too.  Good grooming
will make your dog more attractive and smell
good, too.
P.S.  from Willie, the Westie:  You have probably
noticed by now that we don't go in for shows, (formal
ones that is), around here. (Mums did purchase a new
brush from the West Highland Terrier Club of
America for their upcoming show in Lancaster, PA in
2009).  We do live in the house or  dog garage and
Mums likes us to stay very clean, so we regularly
have her "up to snuff" grooming sessions. We get a
"wee" bit dirty when playing in the yard with each
other, getting caught digging up her peonies or
petunias, or just plain ruff housin',so about once a
week we go through a routine to restore our
otherwise good looks.  It is hard being white when
you are a dog, everything shows. I guess being AKC
registered means we have keep up the image. So for
all you Westie lovers, check our her "Up to Snuff
Grooming Tips".

Mums' Lil Westies  of the Ross Family Farm
"Every family needs a Westie and a Mums to let you have one."
" I must confess, I am a pretty cute West Highland White
Terrier. I am pretty darn cocky about my good looks.  It is
not every day that you see a Westie with as much class,
demeanor and all around attitude as me.  Mums tells me
that everyday and it has really gone to my head.  If you
have better looking West Highland Terrier male send Mums
a picture and tell her about him!"

Willie, hmm, "interested" in a video that I purchased
about grooming around the bum hole!  "Not so sure,
Mums!"

Lil Prince Willie, my first West HIghland White Terrirer is shown
here at age 4 months.  He
obediently sits as I explain to you why we
put Frontline on his back.  We live in the country and have lots of
ticks and fleas.  Our vet recommended we use
Frontline to keep them
away! Just a little dab at the withers every month is all it takes.  I
also give a tab of
Brewer's Yeast as a bed time snack.  I purchase the
Frontline, Pet Tabs, and Brewers Yeast from Revival Animal Health.
(See link above!)  At this age, Willie has had all his parvo and rabies
shots for one year.  He has his collar off so you can't see his tag. He
also has an identification tag on his collar in case he gets lost. He is
registered with the
American Kennel Club as are Jecca, Olivia and
Kate. The
AKC can identify him by his registration number which is
on his collar.  You will want to register your Westie with the
AKC.  It
is the largest, most prestigious registry in the country.
I always puts a
leash on him when I  walk him, but he is quick and
energetic and sometimes breaks into a run before I get it on.  You
really have to watch
Westies. They are always on the lookout for
squirrels and varmits!.  We take 4 walks a day down to the lake,
about 1/4 mile from our house, everyday.  (This is as good for me as
it is for the puppies)!
Next to
preventive medicine and exercise, I make certain that the dogs
live in a safe, clean environment.  The crates are kept clean, the food
and water fresh in clean bowls and the floor of the play area sanitized
everyday, sometimes more if we have accidents, like when I am not
fast enough getting the leashes on so they can go potty.
 Speaking of
food:  I have recently discovered Premium Edge for Skin and Coat
which I purchase at my local co-op.  It has drastically changed my lil
Westies hair and skin. All Westies will shed to some degree, but this
food has also really reduced the amount of hair that comes out when I
groom them.  Try it out!
Westies are so easy to train to sit, stay, come and down.  I would like
to make a note here that we enrolled in our local Petco obedience class.
It was wonderful. Don't pass up this opportunity if you are close to a
pet store that offers obedience classes. They respond to routines.
From
the very beginning, I established a schedule to fit their needs, as well
as mine , and it has become the cornerstone on which I have had such
joy and success in raising healthy, well disciplined and loving dogs.

There is a time for napping, a time for walking, a time for feeding, a
time for potty, a time to just play,  a time to learn obedience and
finally a time to just sit and love.

  FEBRUARY IS DENTAL AWARENESS MONTH!

           *STEPS TO BRUSHING WESTIE'S TEETH

  1. Gradually introduce your Wesite to a brushing program.  The
sessions should be kept short and you should always
provide your Westie  with positive reinforcement.  Do not
over-restrain your Westie, ever, but especially  during the
process. Praise and reassure your Westie throughout the
    entire process.
  2. You will want to help your Westie get used to you having
your hand in their mouth.  To do this, try dipping your finger
into beef bouillon for dogs or tuna water for cats. UGH! Rub
your soaked finger gently over the Westie's gum and teeth.
Remember to make this session short and postive for your
    Westie.
  3. Once your Westie is comfortable with your finger, graduallly
introduce using gauze over your finger and gently scrub your
Westie's teeth in a circular motion.
  4. Now you can finally introduce a toothbrush to your pet.  You
will want to use an ultra-soft brush designed for people or
you can use a toothbrush designed specifically for pets.  Do
not use toothpaste labeled for use in humans because it
could upset your Westie's stomach.  We recommend using
    CET toothpaste.
